Well, haven't written in some time, in fact many of you might not be there, but then there wouldn't be many of you, would there? Last year had weddings, funerals, wills, lots of family stuff, and I just kinda got outta the swing of blogifying.
This year started out with out apparent El Nino hangover lingering. Fishing was OK, new guys liked it, old timers noticed that it wasn't up to snuff. Then came July, and midway through that month things started to heat up. Lots of wahoo, growing number of still dinky dorado, but sporadic sardine sightings and the flag started change direction and stand out from the pole just a bit. August brought on a yellowfin tuna bite that still continues. Virtually all of these fish have been 15-35 pounds with a very occasional fish in the 70's and 80's. This bite is still going on, solidly. These fish are close to shore in places like Muertos, Punta Perico, Castillo, the island, Boca de Alamo, some days there are in all those spots. Bait? you ask, yowza, we've been using good ol' sardines through this whole bite, they aren't huge, but they are what the tuna are eating, hook or no. The bonus deal on this has been with the fish close to shore in those locations the evil net Nazgul boats have been unable to "harvest" them, and the beat goes on, to the point where local tuna prices are way down, too many god damn tuna!! Multiple ice chests per person have been the rule, and so of course have been complaints about luggage charges at the airport, can't win for losing. (Hint: When you check in at the airport, push the "change seat" button and investigate the price to upgrade to first class. Jane and I did it going north on Alaska for $50 each, then you don't get dinged for the extra check bag, and voila, net cost $25. In the other direction is was $368 to upgrade, and so we did not, but worth checking) Throw in a growing amount of dorado, slow steady wahoo bite, a dash of pargo mulatto, and out sunburned subscribers are heading home rubbing their elbows. It's good.
Capt. Chris is just completing this week at Mag Bay, and he had a day Wednesday that I want to brag about. This is the series of texts that he sent me.
8:15 4 dogsnapper in the boat
8:34 just lost 2 big grouper and a larg yellowtail
9:15 7 yellowtail and a small grouper
10:44 2 more dogs and yellows are up to 15
11:35 35 yellowtail, released 5 to stay at limit, and 4 cabrilla
11:45 done on the yellows, heading after more grouper
This was after a Tuesday when they went to the Thetis and got 5 wahoo, and the customers wanted to quit after 5 marlin, Chris said that there was a metric shit load up there.
That's it for now, fingers out of shape, no politics (can't do it), but I do promise to pic this up more regularly, if you're still out there, thanks.
Stay Having Fun,
David
